Kenny Chesney Picks Up The Good Stuff: Major CMA Nominations
Entertainer, Male Vocalist, Album of the Year as Artist & Producer
Nashville, TN: Kenny Chesney, who's never enjoyed more than a single CMA
Awards nomination, walked away from this morning's Country Music Association
Awards nominees press conference with nods in the three biggest categories --
and the potenetial for a 4th award for his production role on the almost
double platinum No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems. In addition to co-producing
No Shoes, which is nominated for Album of the Year, the Luttrell, Tennessean
received nods in both the Male Vocalist and Entertainer of the Year
categories.
"What a year!" says the young man People proclaimed "Hunky Tonk" when
reached on the phone en route to Pueblo, CO. for the Colorado State Fair.
"Entertainer of the Year… that's the big one; that's the one everyone
dreams about. There aren't even words for it. To start out wondering if you
can sell all those tickets and then to have the year end up like this -- it
just gets better and better!"
Having grossed well in excess of $17 million on his first ever headlining
tour, playing America's biggest venues and now waist deep into the fairs,
Kenny Chesney has come into his own in a bag way over the past year. Having
won both Male Artist and the main Video of the Year Award at CMT's fan-voted
Flameworthy Awards this spring, the double double-platinum singer/songwriter
saw his No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems debut at #1 on Billboard's Top 200
Album chart and spend most of the summer atop their Country Albums chart as
well.
"Album of the Year is really something," he continued, addressing his
nominations. "So many people have helped me make this music. So to get a
nomination like that, to me, it recognizes all the incredible musicians,
songwriters, A&R people and most importantly, Buddy (Cannon) and Norro
(Wilson), who have been in this with me for years."
These major nominations arrive on the heels of another milestone for the
country star who's quickly ascending the ranks of the genre's most in-demand
artists. With the publication of this week's Billboard Country Singles chart,
"The Good Stuff" enjoys it's 7th week at #1 -- marking both Chesney's
longest-running chart-topper in a career marked by multiple week #1s and
2002's longest-running #1.
"Some days you get up, you almost have to pinch yourself," says the young
man Country Weekly called "Country's Hottest Bachelor" on their latest cover.
"You try to make good records, find songs that feel right, do the sorta shows
you'd like to see -- and above all, connect with the fans the way those
artists you loved connected with you.
"When we hit that stage every night, when the lights go down and you hear
the screams, that's such a rush. When you put stuff like the seven weeks or
these nominations on top of it, it's really hard to get your head around it
all."
A review in this Tuesday's New York Times raved, "… not an extrovert at
heart -- He sang about devotion, about dreams of stardom, about happily
settling down while reminiscing over youthful songs and escapades. Mr.
Chesney's country is suburbia, a place of prized stability and modest
pleasures. His cozy songs assure listeners that they're not missing a thing."
With similar kudos in Rolling Stone, Entertainment Weekly, Blender, The
Los Angeles Times, Music Connection, Country Music, Country Weekly, The
Washington Post and The Boston Globe, these publications have all cited the
guitar-playing Chesney's ability to distill life for his fans. Chesney
performs "The Good Stuff" on "The Wayne Brady Show" -- taping Sept. 6, airing
Sept. 9. Check your local listings…
