Kenny Chesney Scores Billboard Country Single of the Year
"The Good Stuff" Most Played Song…& There's More Where That Came From
Las Vegas: Kenny Chesney may be in the islands, but that didn't stop his
7 week #1 "The Good Stuff" from being named Country Single of the Year at the
Billboard Music Awards. Having been nominated for Entertainer, Male Vocalist
and Album of the Year for his double platinum No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems
at this year's CMA Awards and headlining country music's top grossing tour --
$24 million-plus, with over 1.8 millions fans played to -- the pride of
Luttrell, Tennessee and one of People's Sexiest Men Alive is enjoying a major
breakthrough year.
"I'm glad I didn't rent the house that didn't have a phone," the good
natured singer/sometimes songwriter says with a laugh. "It's almost like I
should go away more often, because since I've taken a break, it seems like
all these great things have been happening for me…
"And it's a funny thing about the Billboard Awards, because, you know,
growing up, you always heard about the "Billboard" charts and stuff. That was
the absolute last word, so to be recognized at the Billboard Awards, it's one
of those things that makes you smile that smile that makes people wondering
what you're up to."
Certainly the fan-voted CMT: Flameworthy Awards Male Artist of the Year
is kicking back and laying low as he recharges his battery for his highly
anticipated Margaritas'n'Senoritas tour. With a beyond sold-out New Year's
Ever show to preview the new set and production in Nashville, the high energy
performer behind "Young," "She's Got It All," "Don't Happen Twice" and "She
Thinks My Tractor's Sexy" will kick off his tour Jan. 16 in Tupelo,
Mississippi.
Between now and then, look for Kenny Chesney to appear on the American
Music Awards -- broadcast live Jan. 13 on ABC. His #1 Billboard all-genre Top
200 Album debut No Shoes, No Shirt, No Problems is nominated for Favorite
Country Album.
Rolling Stone offered of the pensive disc, "Chesney delivers real
feeling," while Entertainment Weekly proffered, "Country veteran Kenny
Chesney hits commercial paydirt by mining the genre's haunted roots" and The
Hollywood Reporter raved, "Kenny Chesney knows his audience." Additionally,
The New York Times cited, "He sang about devotion, about dreams of stardom,
about happily settling down while reminiscing over youthful songs and
escapades" and The Washington Post concluded, "More than just a record of
hitherto unseen modesty and maturity, NSNSNP is one of the better coming of
age records to come from Nashville's Music Row in years."
Kenny Chesney certainly come of age this year. With a solid touring base,
music that matters -- including his groundbreaking half-sung/half-spoken "A
Lot of Things Different" hitting the Top 10 -- and Billboard's Country Single
of the Year, the man The Los Angeles Times says, "Sings the things that women
want to hear…" is all about taking the music to the fans and finding the
songs that are their lives.
"I can only believe this song connected because lots of people have felt
like this. When you start there, you don't want to have any expectations… But
you kinda know it's gonna touch people. That's the whole point of doing this
really. It's what made me love music -- and it's what I try to give back."
